2. Maui made a special rope and said a karakia to give it strength

Activity 2

Dear Stevenson

I traveled on a Waka to New Zealand. I felt happy because I have never been to New Zealand. Late at night I tried not to go to sleep so I would know where the waka is going.

  1. Hey there Kristopher, thanks for sharing three facts about Maui. My name is Billy and I am from the Summer Learning Journey programme. It's great to see that you've made a start to your blogging summer. I hope you keep it up!

I really liked how in the story the giant fish was the North Island because when you look at a map of the North Island it actually looks like a fish!

Thank you for also writing a letter to Stevenson pretending that you are one of the first travellers to New Zealand. I like how you said you are happy because you have never been to New Zealand.

Do you think you would be nervous or excited? Did you see any sea creatures on the way? What was the weather like during the journey?

    Thanks, Billy

  4. Hey Kristopher, what an awesome name you have. I like how it's spelled with the letter k.

Wow I can't believe you saw a Pacific Viperfish, Atlantic Wolffish, Pair Fangtooth Fish, Six-Gill Shark, Giant Tube Worms, and a Vampire Squid.

Those are incredibly specific well done! That's the kind of writing we love to read.

I bet those big waves, the rain and the storms made it difficult to get to New Zealand. I would be so worried we were going to capsize and drown.

    Scary times!

    Billy

  5. Hi Kristopher!

My name is Ellee, I am another part of the Summer Learning Journey Crew that is commenting on your blogs this summer.

Looks like you have made a great start to the Summer Learning Journey activities!

I really enjoyed reading your three facts about Maui, great job! I think it's pretty cool that the giant fish Maui caught became the North Island, when you look at it on the map it really does look like a sting ray and the South Island does look like the shape of the waka.
Did you have a favourite part of the story?

I also enjoyed your letter to Stevenson! I think it is pretty cool that you were able to stay awake at night to control the waka - I would have been sleeping like a baby and probably got lost!

Keep up the great work Kristopher!
    Ellee :)
